We are proud to report on the progress of Sodexo’s IFMS Inland School Based Trainees. Each trainee is excelling in their placements, and have successfully completed the first half of the 2-year Certificate II program. Last month, all trainees received a visit in the workplace, as they were nearing their first complete year of work placements.

Sodexo’s school-based program is designed to create paid employment and training for regional based school students in the areas of Administration, Hospitality, Horticulture, and Maintenance.   Students from Tom Price Senior High school currently work one day per week with the Windawarri, Rocklea Palms, and the Paraburdoo Property teams.  The program is managed in partnership with Sodexo’s chosen Group Training Organisation MEGT, led by Michael Timpson who provides expert support between the school and workplace.  Sodexo is thrilled to continue the relationship with MEGT to support our school-based trainees across WA and QLD.  2018 will see an exciting program expansion in Tom Price/Paraburdoo and the Construction Pathways area, broadening opportunities in maintenance vocations with IFMS BM Managers, Bill Feeney, and Vladimir Jovovic.

Shakira Jones – Certificate II Hospitality

Shakira works with the catering team here at Rocklea Palms, in sunny Paraburdoo – a small town within the Pilbara Region of Western Australia. Shakira is being trained and mentored by Managers Taryn Petersen & Neil Mansfield and guided daily by their Head Chef Alvin Jickain. Shakira’s daily duties include setting up food and packing away food for dinner, crib and breakfast services, restocking during service periods, washing dishes, wiping benches and sweeping and mopping floors. Shakira provides excellent Service Spirit whilst interacting with the residents and working alongside the catering team of qualified chefs and trained service attendants. Shakira most enjoys the challenge of arranging the crib area so it is perfectly presented and clean for the residents.

The site team is increasing Shakira’s training exposure to making sandwiches, fruit and vegetable preparation and working alongside a chef so she can understand the food preparation and learn how to follow a menu. This will also provide Shakira with the understanding of the HACCP and food safe policies, a focal point of Sodexo’s service.

“Shakira has a willingness to learn and strives for greatness in everything she does”. – Taryn Peterson – Rocklea Palms Manager

Andrea Tapera – Certificate II Hospitality

Andrea works with Windawarri’s catering team in all general areas of catering, under the expert guidance of Head Chef Lana Martin.  Andrea really enjoys working with the Sodexo team assisting with truck deliveries, prepping vegetables and being given the responsibility of handling seafood.  “Fish & Chip Friday’s” are Andrea’s specialty, as she is given special responsibility for crumbing and battering all the fish.  Andrea also assists directly with the Village’s busy function schedule for town and client events.  Needless to say, an invaluable Hospitality learning experience in a busy, dynamic work environment!  Village Manager Shannon McDonald is particularly impressed with Andrea’s team spirit, and confident communication style – always willing to help the team, and always keen to schedule work days to the benefit of team operations.

“I really like getting experience communicating with lots of different people, and hope that I can work full time with Sodexo in a gap year after school”. Andrea Tapera – Windawarri.

We are really impressed with Andrea’s team spirit, and would be thrilled to offer employment within our team in the future – well done Andrea!Shannon McDonald – Windawarri Village Manager
