Safe, Trusting and Respectful Teams

At Sodexo, we believe in zero harm—with equal importance on psychological wellbeing as physical safety. This means focusing on a culture of positive safety and what we can do every day to foster Safe, Trusting, and Respectful teams.

Conducting ourselves with the highest standards of ethics and integrity is everyone’s responsibility at Sodexo. Sodexo has zero tolerance to verbal, emotional, psychological, sexual, physical or any other form of victimisation or abuse in the workplace.

All employees have a right to a workplace free from inappropriate, unreasonable, or unlawful workplace behaviours. It is also important to be aware of our personal biases and individual boundaries. While you may not think something was offensive, it could have a serious negative effect or impact on others.

What are psychosocial hazards?

Let’s explore what psychosocial hazards are and why they matter. Psychosocial hazards refer to workplace factors that impact employees’ mental and emotional well-being. These hazards can be just as detrimental as physical risks, affecting productivity, engagement, and overall job satisfaction.

Workers in the Fly-In-Fly-Out (FIFO) industry can face unique challenges and are at a greater risk for mental ill health. Factors such as social isolation, fatigue and long hours, shift work, high job demands, bullying, sexual harassment and discrimination including violent behaviours and traumatic events have been recognised as hazards. This can lead to adverse and sometimes dangerous effects on mental and emotional well-being if not addressed and managed properly.

What are we doing about it?

Clear policies and procedures for managing psychosocial risks: We ensure the right controls are in place with appropriate and accessible support for employees and leaders.

Leadership Empowerment: We empower leaders at all levels with the necessary resources and knowledge through the Just Culture framework and training programs that emphasise psychosocial risk management, communication skills, and mental health awareness.

Promoting Inclusiveness: Inclusivity is key to a connected and mentally healthy workplace where people can bring their whole selves to work. Our teams are diverse, and we celebrate our individual differences as a strength. We encourage open dialogue, active listening, and empathy towards one another.

Building Resilience: Self-care and preventative measures are necessary for healthy stress management such as exercise, connecting with others, mindfulness, relaxation and wellness activities to help build emotional resilience. PeopleSense Employee Assistance Program (EAP) can help you explore healthy strategies or professional counselling.

Mental Health First Aid & I Hear You: I Hear You is our mental health initiative aimed at increasing mental health awareness, reducing stigma and encouraging early interventions for help and support across the business. Just as we provide physical first aid, we train team leaders to recognise signs of distress and how to support.

Call it In, Call it Out: An upstander is someone who speaks or acts in support of a person or cause, particularly in situations where someone is being harassed, bullied, or discriminated against. We can all be upstanders for a Safe, Trusting, and Respectful Team culture by calling out bad behaviour when we witness it and/or escalating by reporting and calling it in.
