Jermarley Howard 1st year Chef Apprenticeship

Congratulations to our Apprentice Chef, Jermarley Howard, who has just completed the 1st year of his Certificate III in Commercial Cookery apprenticeship at Windawarri Village.

Jermarley commenced employment with Sodexo on 28 March 2017 and completed a Certificate III in Hospitality before commencing his apprenticeship on30 October 2017. He has proven to be a valued member of the Windawarri Team and broader Sodexo business through his dedication to learning and his support to various cultural events and activities.

Jermarley was born in Port Hedland and raised with his Mum’s people; the Bardi at One Arm Point and Yawuru in Broome in the Kimberley region. His Dad is a Wajari Yamatji from the Geraldton region.

A highlight of his career thus far is Jermarley’s involvement earlier this year in Camp Kurlungka, as part of Sodexo’s ongoing sponsorship of the annual Karajini Experience in the in the Karajini National Park. Over the course of the four-day event, Jermarley assisted renowned celebrity Indigenous Chef, Mark Olive (aka The Black Olive), with preparation of Indigenous-themed dishes for all event attendees.

Jermarley shares some words about his experience with Sodexo while completing the first year of his apprenticeship:

My journey with Sodexo has been pretty good, I enjoy working with lots of different people from different backgrounds and I’ve learnt lots from them.  Shannon, Lana, Yeemon and Merrick at Windawari are all supportive and helpful and have each taught me lots about cooking and how to work as a team. My Mentor Michael Little always keeps on my back and he has high expectations of me which makes me work harder. With Sodexo there are lots of opportunities for me, always something different. My ambition is to first complete my apprenticeship, build up my skills and experience, and whatever comes in the future, I will figure it out as I go.

In the kitchen, Jermarley has fit right into the team at Windawarri Village. From the start, Head Chef, Lana Martin, recognised Jermarley’s talents and potential, and strongly supported him in his goal of becoming a Chef.

“It has been such an honour to support Jermarley in his journey throughout this apprenticeship. It is a privilege to be able to work alongside and mentor him during this time. He has worked so hard to be where he is today and deserves.”
