The Trudging Sodexo Traralgon get Moving for Movember

It’s that special time of year when moustaches begin to grace the faces of men across the country. Raising money for a range of men’s health issues, Movember has become a national (and now global) institution since its humble crumb-catching beginnings in Melbourne back in 2003.

Throughout the month, thousands of Aussie men let their lip foliage bloom to show their support and gather donations – but how are women supposed to participate?

The Movember Foundation has a created a program for ‘Mo Sistas’ to get on board regardless of the ability to grow a ‘mo.  One such Mo Sista is Sodexo’s own Leonie Whelan, Chef Manager at Yallambee Village Aged Care facility in Traralgon. Not wanting to miss out on a chance to participate in such a worthy cause, Leonie got the crew on board and created a Movember fundraising page.

She and her catering team are doing fundraising with a twist, enter: MOVEmber! Now the team is on the move, showing their support by committing to reach a target distance together 1800km by November 30.  Being on their feet all day, the busy team has been known to clock some mileage. The Sodexo team on site at Yallambee is made up of “a kitchen full of women, plus just one man”,  dubbed as the Trudging Sodexo Traralgon.

With the support of donations, the team is counting their daily steps for the month of November. The team has a target distance is far enough to reach Queensland! The team has reached 759,000 steps so far, about 575km which is the equivalent distance from Traralgon, VIC to Batemans Bay, NSW.

“I thought it might be cool if we do MOVEmber and see how far we walk around the kitchen and Yallambee. We have set ourselves a goal and will achieve it as a team. Men are facing a health crisis that isn’t being talked about. They’re dying too young – much before their time. This year, I’m taking action by raising funds for prostate cancer, testicular cancer, mental health and suicide prevention. Donate today and we can be the difference. We can stop men dying too young.”  – Leonie Whelan, Chef Manager – Yallambee Village Traralgon
