Spider mower – Weipa Sodexo team wins monthly RTA safety innovation award
The HSE Innovation program, organised by RTA Weipa Operations, runs annually from July-June and every month recognises and rewards the best ideas to improve safety for employees.
We are very proud to announce that our Weipa Sodexo team won the innovation award for their new grounds maintenance machine called the Spider Mower.
The “Spider mower” is a unique remote controlled mower designed for the maintenance of almost all types of terrain. Spider mower has the versatility to mow a range of surfaces from fine turf to heavy brush on both flat and sloped surfaces. The operation is safe, comfortable and eliminates the risks of:
- Slips, trips & falls
- Awkward body positioning
- Prolonged exposure by leaning forward and strain on back and upper limbs & repetitive movements
- Prolonged exposure to hand-arm vibration
At Sodexo, our ultimate goal is to achieve a zero harm workplace, which includes both physical and mental health safety. We focus on prevention meaning that we source best practice and implement controls in order to mitigate risk. The concept of the Spider mower is a good example as it was identified and the concept created during a business review. The teams were looking for engineering solutions to remove manual tasks and repetitive movement risks.
Christian Wakeling, Physiotherapist, HSE –Weipa Operations Rio Tinto Aluminium said: “I think this is a fantastic example of an excellent manual handling improvement”
Congratulations to Gregor Karst (Project Manager – Weipa Mine and Town Services), Greg Allen (Regional HSE Manager QLD/NT/SA), Scott Morrison (Operations Manager QLD/NT) and David Walker (Relief HSEQ Coordinator).
