2018 MERC Mining Emergency Response Competition
26 November 2018
The skills of mining response teams who help ensure safe workplaces and communities, in the event of emergency, are vital to regional communities in WA. These skills are on display at the MERC Mining Emergency Response Competition taking place from 23-25 November.
MERC is a not for profit organisation with the aim of providing a world class, safe and sustainable, industry event focused on fostering valuable networks and building professional and personal life skills. MERC relies on the skills and support of volunteers and sponsors to create a unique training opportunity in a realistic environment. MERC provides valuable skill building opportunities for volunteer mines rescue teams, by providing a series of realistic scenarios, simulating real life events, covering all emergency response disciplines; road crash rescue, hazardous material response, vertical rescue, firefighting, confined space, emergency team readiness and first aid.
Mines rescue personnel play an important role in protecting the community. Due to the remote locations of many mines sites, it is common practice for them to have mutual aid agreements with their local shires, other sites and the state emergency services. This means rescue teams attend emergencies outside the mine perimeter to assist the local community in situations such as road accidents, medical emergencies, fires, floods and much more. Congratulations to Vicky and Luke from Sodexo Degrussa who competed as part of Degrussa’s Emergency Response Team; the team placed 9th overall out of the 18 entries, coming up against very prominent mining companies.
“I thank the team for their hard work, professionalism and their exemplary behaviour throughout the weekend, they did Sandfire proud. I would also like to thank the Managers and department leaders for giving the members the time required for the training and attendance of this event. ” – Jason Gillan, OHS&T Superintendent, Sandfire Resources NL
Sodexo is proud to sponsor this exciting event in support of our community, as well as the safety of our employees, clients and customers. Following the 2 day competition, participants, volunteers, sponsors attended the MERC Award Ceremony. Laura McDonald, Shaun Palmer, and Nikita White were also at the event representing Sodexo and celebrating the winners at the gala dinner in Perth on Sunday night where our own Renae Armstrong was recognised as MERC’s Volunteer of the Year!
