Sacred Heart Mission Possible

Volunteering at St Kilda’s Sacred Heart Mission was the mission for six of Sodexo’s Melbourne team as part of this year’s Stop Hunger Servathon, Sodexo’s annual fundraising and volunteer marathon.

Prepared with some comprehensive pre-task reading, the team’s task was to prepare and serve lunch to the mission’s large population of clients.

The day began with the 9:00am induction by Sacred Heart’s Volunteer’s Coordinator Stephanie.  The Sodexo team soon launched themselves into the preparation phase; peeling and dicing spuds, halving pears and even removing the tiny stalks from ‘on the vine’ sultanas. During this time Sacred Heart’s team of volunteer chefs prepared the menu: chicken parmigiana, veggie burgers, chips, salad and pumpkin soup.

The Serving Phase followed from 11.40.  A steady stream of clients filtered in over the next two hours and were treated to a warm welcome and a delicious, filling, hot lunch.   Nick O’ Callaghan managed the soup and bread station,  Roger Sparvell and  Akshanka Mahajan tag-teamed chips, veggie burgers and washing cutlery while the ‘floor team, Mark Chalmers,  Jacqui Christ and the indefatigable “runner’ Tao Chen, took care of table clearing logistics and other tasks.

Switching to ‘clean up mode’ the team worked with other volunteers to leave the Mission’s kitchen spic and span by exactly 1:45pm, ready to operate the next day.

The Sacred Heart Mission’s meal program operates every day of the year, serving approximately 300 meals every day for people who are homeless, disadvantaged or socially isolated. This was a rewarding and inspiring experience for everyone on the Sodexo team. Volunteers are a vital part of this much needed service and we are proud to have been able to help on the day.
