Road trip raises funds and awareness for RFDS in WA

It was like Mad Max – but with far more fun than fury on the road. Sodexo’s own Carolyn Gaw, Business Improvement Manager for Energy and Resources, has just returned to Perth after volunteering in a week-long ‘Great Northern Tour’ road trip across Western Australia to raise funds for the Royal Flying Doctor Service.

The event, run by a non-profit organisation On The Road Again Tours, has been raising funds for the RFDS in WA for seven years – over $350,000 so far.

The road trip covers a different part of WA each year. A convoy of 4WDs and pre-1980 cars set off to explore some of the less well-travelled corners of the state – without a map. Complete with theme and costumes, teams set off each morning with drivers and passengers given only ‘route notes’ to direct them to the next stop.

Along the journey, support volunteers such as Carolyn navigate roads, and offer medical and mechanical services to the teams – which can sometimes require many helping hands on the bumpy remote tracks, Carolyn says.

The teams then collect charitable donations and sponsors at each stop along the way. This year’s participants left Perth on October 7th, winding upwards through tiny towns to Monkey Mia on the coast before heading back home by the 14th.

Sodexo also donated $500 to support Carolyn’s volunteer spirit and our ongoing sponsorship of the RFDS organisation.

“My role was navigation volunteer for the seven-day event, where we led the teams along each track, marking difficult and hard-to-see milestones as well as removing obstacles on the roads along the track.

“It was such a rewarding adventure and I was proud to support such a great cause.”  Carolyn Gaw, Business Improvement Manager, Energy and Resources Australia
