‘Teamwork builds ships’ at ASC
ASC Shipbuilding and the Sodexo ASC teams shared a proud moment as the NUSHIP ‘Hobart’ successfully completed the Sea Acceptance Trials, providing the Royal Australian Navy with one of the world’s most capable multi-mission warships, and the first of its kind for the Commonwealth.
The Hobart is the first of the three Air Warfare Destroyers (AWD) ships that ASC is responsible for the construction of the AWD’s at their dedicated shipyard – ASC South – located in Osborne, South Australia. Sodexo was selected as a dedicated service provider to support ASC’s operations during this massive project.
Mark Lamarre, Chief Executive Officer at ASC Shipbuilding wrote to personally thank Sodexo and its personnel for their indirect but essential contribution to the project, stating “teamwork builds ships”.
“This success was the culmination of many individuals’ commitment, skill and dedication to achieving a common objective. Your team’s dedication and support during the build & test of NUSHIP Hobart was a contributing factor to the success of the trials, you and the team can take pride in this achievement.”
The team at ASC was also formally recognised for their achievements over the past year as a winner at Sodexo’s Excellence Awards for Corporate, Education and Healthcare segments on the East Coast. The team received the Business Improvement Award for demonstrating excellent levels of measurable improvement over the course of the year. Operations manager – Neil Oliver, Catering manager – Ann Moir, and Facilities manager – Leigh Burgess, have continually driven growth in revenue and created value from new ventures including Sodexo being chosen to assist with the new ship sea trials. Leigh Burgess, Facility Manager at ASC has said: “the staff are happy to receive recognition for all the work they do; they are a big part of the success we have had over the years that Sodexo has been at ASC.”
For the past 20 years, Sodexo has been providing services to ASC Shipbuilding, Australia’s largest specialised defence shipbuilding organisation and a critical part of Australia’s defence industry. These services include facilities management (grounds maintenance, pest control, and waste disposal and laundry services) and catering. By outsourcing these services to Sodexo, this has allowed ASC to maintain focus on its highly technical operations and create efficiency across 7 of its high-tech maintenance and construction facilities managed by Sodexo.
