Belinda Bean has been recognised for a reaching significant milestone this week, celebrating 20 years of service at Sodexo. She was presented with a long service award, enjoying a morning tea with her team, client, and colleagues on site.

Known for always willing to go the extra mile to exceed client expectations, Belinda truly exemplifies Sodexo’s Service Spirit, Team Spirit, and Spirit of Progress. Throughout her long career with Sodexo, Belinda has been able to find new challenges to progress and develop herself. She shares with us her story of career progression and journey:

I joined Sodexo (then Gardener Merchant) in 1998 as a casual catering assistant at the Ford Geelong contract.  In September that year, I applied for the catering assistant role for which I received a phone call the same day asking me to start the next day.  I walked in scared and inexperienced, but determined.  

My positive can-do attitude enabled me to demonstrate my skills and as a result I quickly progress into permanent part-time and full time site manager roles. As a young and enthusiastic employee, I absorbed everything that Sodexo offered me in training from frontline kitchen roles, vending services, administration and to learning all I could about the company and how to manage the business.  I was in awe of the size of Sodexo and excited at the prospect of opportunities to progress my career within Sodexo.  I even enrolled myself into evening night classes for a year and completed my Certificate IV in Business management.   

Then in 2005, I relocated to Melbourne and was successful in obtaining my first unit manager role. It was a 24/7 fast paced operation, managing two onsite cafes and a team of 30 employees. The client was incredibly dynamic but also very supportive and I was able to make improvements to the catering offering there, culminating in a refurbishment of one of the onsite cafes. I gained enormous experience in managing large teams, industrial relations and an in-depth understanding of EBA’s (enterprise bargaining agreements).

In 2008, I was offered the opportunity to move into my first corporate services role at the Mercedes Benz contract. I was excited to be moving into a new segment and took every opportunity to learn as much as I could about corporate catering. I loved the environment and catering for corporate functions.   

In 2009, Sodexo were looking for a manager at one of their Education sites, Haileybury College, which is ranked as the best private school in Australia.   I applied for the role as Unit Manager, after visiting the contract and seeing another opportunity learn a new business segment and add value to the contract. Fast forward 10 years later, our business continues to double year on year. 

By 2013, I had also completed my Diploma and Advanced Diploma of Business which not only enabled me to gain an in-depth understanding of financial management, but also gave me the opportunity to further progress into a business manager role with Sodexo.

In 2017, Haileybury City won National Industrial/institutional caterer of the year at the Savour hospitality awards.  I could not be more proud of my teams and the exceptional service we continue to deliver to our client and customers on a daily basis.

Through opportunity, persistence, positivity and enthusiasm, my role over the past 20 years has vastly evolved and grown within the company.  From catering assistant to business manager, from Sodexho to Sodexo, business restructures, refurbishments, technology, growth in day-to-day operations, and now leading manager to five corporate education sites in Australia.

For me, the thing that really makes Sodexo stand out is the people, the network of wonderful people who make our customers and clients feel welcome. I enjoy making a difference and leading my teams to deliver exceptional services to our clients on a daily basis.  I love being a positive ambassador for Sodexo!   

I wouldn’t be where I am today if it wasn’t for the wonderful people I have worked with over the years and the mentoring that I received from some very talented and supportive senior managers. I look forward to my future career with Sodexo and continuing to learn and grow.
